A baby shower is a kind of party that celebrates and welcomes a new member to the family In this tradition, expectant parents usually receive gifts or money for their expected child, which, in a way, supports the parents by helping them get the things that they need for their baby (or the things that they may not be able to afford)

Baby showers are generally held in the later stages of pregnancy (in the last 2 months, for instance) There are, however, certain cultural beliefs that make people purposefully wait for the baby to arrive before having a baby shower Adoptive parents, at times, wait until after the adoption is final and the baby has arrived in their home

Baby showers are generally organized by close friends, relatives, or coworkers of the expectant parents (because baby showers center on gift giving, it is considered inappropriate for a family member to host such events)

In its early form, baby showers were held exclusively for mothers to be, and only women were invited to attend the party In addition, baby showers were traditionally held only for the first child Today, however, many people arrange baby showers for both parents, and they can now be also arranged for every succeeding children (even children who have been adopted)

Activities in a baby shower typically include games, special activies, presents, and, most especially, food

Below are some of the most common baby shower recipes:

Pizza Sandwiches

Pizza sauce (can be store bought or homemade)

Cottage cheese (lowfat)

English muffins

Parmesan cheese

1 Mix 2-3 tbsp of pizza sauce with 2-3 tbsp of cottage cheese

2 Spread the mixture onto one half of the English muffin

3 Sprinkle with parmesan cheese

4 Broil for 5 minutes or until cheese is melted Serve

Creamy Tomato Soup

1 tsp vegetable oil

1 can tomato soup (condensed)

Milk

1 tbsp basil

Mozarella or croutons (for toppings)

1 Heat vegetable oil in a medium saucepan

2 Add the tomato soup

3 Add milk (approximately the same amount as that of the tomato soup)

4 Add basil and cook slowly on low heat (do not boil)

5 Top with a sprinkling of shredded mozzarella and croutons Serve

Cheese Balls

1 half lb cheese (cheddar or grated)

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1 pack cream cheese

4 oz Tabasco sauce

2 tsp onion

Chopped nuts

2 tsp catsup or chili sauce

1 Mix all ingredients together using a mixer or a food processor (the cheese should be at room temperature)

2 Empty mixed ingredients on small bowls lined with plastic wrap

3 Refrigerate overnight

4 To serve, remove wrap and sprinkle with nuts Serve with assorted crackers

Chicken Puffs

4 tbsp butter

1 half cup boiling water

1 half cup flour

2 eggs

1 half cup shredded cheese

2 cups cooked chicken

2 tbsp olives

2 tbsp wine

1 fourth cup mayonnaise

1 Melt butter in boiling water

2 Add flour

3 Stir vigorously until mixture forms a ball

4 Remove from heat and cool slightly

5 Add egg and beat briskly until smooth

6 Stir in cheese

7 Scoop 1 tsp dough into a greased baking sheet

8 Preheat oven to 400F

9 Bake the puffs for 20 minutes Remove from oven, cool, and split

10 Combine the remaining ingredients with the finely chopped cooked chicken, pimiento, and olives

11 Fill each puff with 2 tsp of the mixture Serve

One of the easiest and most commonly grilled foods in the United States is probably the grilled hamburger But exactly what goes into the perfect construction of this dish? You may think it’s as simple as slapping a lump of ground meat down on the flames, but there are certain other techniques you can use to build a better sandwich All burgers are most definitely not created equal So, here’s a list of simple yet effective things you can do to make yours stand out every time

Although the selection of meat is down to personal taste, the most succulent hamburgers are made from ground beef with a certain fat content to it We have been conditioned as a society to avoid fat at all costs, but for the best burger this is not the way to go The official percentages that you want is around 80% meat to 20% fat No-one goes to the supermarket with a super-duper fat measuring device in their pocket, so let me make it easy for you This is roughly what can be found in chuck Buy it Chuck is the preferred cut for making the best burgers

When preparing your homemade hamburger, it is important to shape the meat into a patty which is relatively flat Don’t go for anything thicker than about 3/4 of an inch either I know, I know, you really want to ignore this one Bigger is better! I’m guilty of this Big, fat burgers are delicious That’s my philosophy when making burgers for myself Your burger should be done your way, after all But when going for the perfect burger which you may want to serve to guests, you should know that it is less likely for those thicker burgers to cook up nice and evenly

Another very important thing to remember is something that we’ve all done at one point in our lives Do not ever press the burger down with the spatula or anything else while it is grilling I know that it’s tempting to do this Resist! I know you’ve seen it on every television show with a diner cook in it Resist! When pushing on the burger like this, the juices are squeezed out, which means that the flavor is squeezed out as well As a minor note, it may also cause flare-ups I say “minor” because the eyebrow hair will grow back, but a dry burger will never get any better than that

Now on to the ingredients you’ll need for that perfect hamburger

1) Ground chuck

2) A little salt

3) A little pepper

4) Some hamburger buns

Yup, that’s it Simple, isn’t it? This ain’t rocket science, just a few tricks that will make your burgers all that they should be Now here’s the step-by-step

You have a few different choices as far as the cooking contraption goes, but for the sake of this article, let’s go with a nice, open flame You’ll need to grease your grill with some vegetable oil, then get a medium fire going underneath it

While that grill is heating up, you want to be mixing your meat Add some salt Add some pepper You can use your own judgment as to the tastes of your hungry diners Then get your hands in there Kneed things around Spoons are for sissies When it’s all mixed together, shape your concoction into burgers Remember, about 3/4 of inch thick on that patty You want an evenly cooked final product for your hungry guests

Slap those burgers down over the heat If you like your meat of the medium persuasion, you’re looking at somewhere between 5 and 7 minutes on each side If you want, feel free to make a tiny cut into each patty to check that they are cooked

Just before they are ready to go, start toasting those buns Put them on the grill for about a minute, split side down You’re going for a light brown effect here

Take everything off the grill Stack it all together Add anything that you want in the way of ketchup, possibly some lettuce, or a host of other things Hoorah! You now have yourself one fine hamburger

Now, all that being said, here’s an additional note or two on food preparation safety You have to remember that I’ve only given you some guidelines for the best result For example, I can only estimate on the time it will take for a medium burger You know your grill and how hot it gets You know if it’s 40-degrees outside when you’re cooking And you also know if you’ve followed the directions about making a patty that is only 3/4 of an inch thick You have, right? Don’t make me come over there Remember that the inside of the burger should always be tested to ensure that they are thoroughly cooked before serving

Also, you’ll find that there are many different books and chefs who would advise that the meat should be at room temperature before cooking However, it is better for safety’s sake, to keep it in the fridge in order to avoid airborne bacteria It is also essential that you put cooked burgers onto a fresh plate, not the same one that the raw meat was on, as it may still contain bacteria Always follow the first rule of cooking - Do not poison the guests

And that’s it When following all of the above instructions on how to make the perfect hamburger all that is left to do is to sit down and get your mouth around the most succulent and best tasting hamburger that you will have ever eaten On that note, I am heading right for the kitchen to prepare my very own Enjoy!

Looking for something to take with you on the road, or a snack to munch at your desk? Forget about those awful Powerbars and other various soy bars Granola bars are OK, but they do not have much protein High quality protein bars are available at the store, but for $5 a pop! We are looking for something cheap and easy, and here it is Do-it-yourself, homemade protein bars

Homemade Protein Bars: The Recipe

3 1/2 cups rolled oats

1 1/2 cups dried milk

1 tablespoon cinnamon

1 cup lite syrup

2 scoops protein powder

2 large egg whites or 1 egg

1 1/4 cup orange juice

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup raisins or dried fruit

Start by preheating the oven to 325 degrees Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper, or spray on some non-stick butter flavored Pam spray In a large metal bowl, mix all the ingredients until the oats are well coated Spread the mix onto the cookie sheet and press down to make 10 cutting lines so you can separate them into 10 protein bars later Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown While still warm, cut them apart and allow to cool before wrapping The bars can be stored airtight at room temperature for up to 2 weeks

Optional Upgrades

Nutty Bars - use 1 cup chopped nuts instead of dried fruit or raisins

Fruity Bars - experiment with various extracts other than vanilla to change up the flavor

The Protein Bar Diet - make a whole bunch of these bars with various fruits and nuts, and various flavors of protein powder Eat the bars for 3 out of 5 meals each day and make the other two meals small Do this for a month and see if you don’t drop a couple pounds

Peanut Butter Protein Brownies : The Recipe

1 scoop of protein powder; chocolate, vanilla, or peanut butter

1 tablespoon natural peanut butter

milk or water

Mix all ingredients together in a small glass bowl; do not use plastic If the resulting mixture is too thick add a couple drops of milk or water to loosen it up until it reaches your desired consistency Since it is already in a glass bowl, microwave on high for 30-45 seconds Mixture should come out to a cake/brownie like consistency

Many friends of mine have doubted this recipe, thinking the peanut butter protein brownies would be mediocre at best Instead what they find is a protein party in their mouths Give this one a try for a quick high protein, high ‘healthy-fats’ snack

My grandmother passed away when I was twelve She was born and raised in rural Amish country in Indiana Though it was over twenty five years ago when she died, I clearly remember her and her funny ways She had a ‘davenport,’ used ‘rouge,’ and was allergic to perfume and only used ivory soap She was forever pulling out her annoying vinyl measuring tape from a golden, round, wicker sewing basket with a matching lid she kept next to her sofa, or davenport She would wrap it around my neck, my arms and my legs, taking notes to ensure the clothing she made me would fit She always checked to see if I scrubbed behind my ears with a ‘warshcloth’ and her house was not child friendly, at all She was meticulously clean, in fact she even ironed her sheets She was peculiar to me as a child, but let me tell you, that woman knew how to bake the best pie in the whole wide world

Grandma was an awesome cook and she loved to do it Christmas was amazing as a child We ate on real china and drank from expensive cranberry glass goblets She had a special dish for everything on the table and only used the nicest, freshest linens She always baked at least three different kinds of pies and there would be cookies and candies and homemade bread and turkey and mashed potatoes with amazing gravy and stuffing Oh, the stuffing or ‘dressing ‘ Sorry, I need a moment to reminisce

Some good memories there That is what a great recipe will do, create irreplaceable memories For twenty five years, I have longed to be again sitting at Grandmas in front of her grand Christmas spread eating a piece of one of her best pies made with the freshest ingredients Cherry, rhubarb, strawberry, blueberry, the filling is just an after thought when you have a delicious, flaky crust I certainly cannot go back in time, but guess what, time has brought them to me I found a box filled with her recipes at my aunts house She was holding onto them for dear life, but what good is an amazing recipe if it is tucked in a box, unused for years and years

I pried the magical box from my aunts white knuckles and have decided to not only cook these recipes , one at a time, but I want to share them I love to cook a dish everyone will enjoy and come back begging for more My children will inevitably prepare my most beloved and delicious family recipes with their children and they will be talking about how ‘to die for the pie is’ for generations to come My kids love it when I make something new and exciting for them to eat and even like to help in the kitchen

Here is a great unique dessert that is so easy to make and yes, it is from the magic box It is called cobbler cake and you are going to love it It is great with vanilla ice cream, whipped topping, or just a spoon I cannot decide whether it is cobbler or cake, but it sure is yummy

Turn on the oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish

1 can of crushed pineapple

1 can of cherry pie filling

1 box of white, yellow or lemon cake, dry

7 oz shredded coconut

1 cup crushed walnuts

1 cup melted butter

First, pour the entire can of pineapple, juice and all into the greased pan Second, empty the can of cherry pie filling over the pineapple Next, completely cover the fruits with the dry cake mix and do not stir Layer the coconut on top of that and then the walnuts Drizzle the melted butter, (I use a turkey baster) over the entire thing and throw it in the oven Yes, it is that simple Set your timer for 70 minutes It is done when it is golden brown and firm in the middle

It has been the aim of the author to gather the precise formulas of the best candies made from private recipes, also those sold by confectioners, and present them in such manner and a form so simple that any school girl or boy may concoct for themselves or friends the finest of candies at very little expense

There is a class of people who, from stern necessity, cannot afford to indulge in the best chocolate creams ; so to this class of people these recipes will also be invaluable, not only placing within their reach the choicest of confections, but practically eliminating the cost, because nearly all kitchens contain the various ingredients that go to make candy, and only the formulas are needed to combine them into the most delicious foods

CHOCOLATE BONBONS

Take two ounces of powdered gum Arabic and soak it in a cupful of boiling water; then strain through a cheese cloth; add a teaspoonful of vanilla and enough powdered sugar to make a stiff paste Form the mixture into balls about the size of marbles, and set aside to dry Now make an icing Melt five ounces of sweet chocolate; put in with it two tablespoonfuls of water

Beat up the whites of two eggs, adding sufficient granulated sugar to make a soft icing; then stir in the melted chocolate Dip the balls into this icing, one at a time, and place on waxed paper to dry

MARASCHINO BONBONS

Are made the same as Chocolate Bonbons, with the exception that a teaspoonful of maraschino is used in the icing instead of chocolate

COFFEE BONBONS

Proceed as directed for Chocolate Bonbons, using coffee extract in the icing instead of chocolate

CRYSTALLIZED CHERRIES

With a cupful of best granulated sugar mix a table-spoonful of butter and four tablespoonfuls of water; then boil to the point that if you drop some mixture into cold water, it will form a hard ball Have some choice cherries, stoned and ready in a pan, and pour the syrup over them Gently move them around, so that they will be well coated, and set aside to cool When nearly cold, dry them in a warm place

CRYSTALLIZED PLUMS

Select ripe plums of the best quality Slit them on one side and remove stones; then proceed precisely as for Crystallized Cherries Other fruits may be coated in a similar manner

CRYSTALLIZED NUTS

Beat the white of an egg and in it put the nut kernels Stir them around and drain the egg off Beat it again, repeat the operation, then roll the nut kernels, one by one, in powdered sugar Place them on a plate and put the plate in a cool oven When the icing becomes dry and firm, take them out and keep in a dry place

FROSTED CHERRIES

Take the white of an egg and beat it well, adding a teaspoonful of cold water, and into this dip the cherries, one at a time, holding them by their stems; then roll the cherries in pulverized sugar and lay them on waxed paper to dry Keep in a cool place until ready for use

BUTTER SCOTCH

To a cupful of brown sugar add as much water and a tablespoonful of vinegar; set to boil and after coming to a boil add one and one-half ounces of butter; then continue boiling until brittle when dropped into cold water Remove from fire and pour into buttered pans to cool

Mix together a cupful of granulated FUDGE sugar, an ounce of butter, one-half cupful of milk, and place over a fire to boil Stir continuously When the mixture commences to boil add an ounce of finely-chopped chocolate, and continue boiling about ten minutes Test frequently in cold water, and when it reaches the degree where if you drop a small amount into cold water it will form a ball which cracks softly when you bite it, add a half tea-spoonful of vanilla, stir until quite stiff, and pour into buttered pans to cool When partly cold cut into small squares

The above candies are very delicious, and as mentioned above, can be made by almost any keen young schoolchild Enjoy!

Rolled up Greek pies constitute a type of pies you probably wont find at any Greek restaurant This type of Greek cheese pie is usually made by expert cooks because it is a pie recipe that requires a certain amount of skill

As you probably know there are many different kinds of Greek pies this is perhaps one of the most tasty ones This recipe is perhaps one of the easiest of its kind It is a good rolled up Greek pie recipe that can be made by a beginner cook

The ingredients you will need to prepare this pie are 1 �½ kg of flour, a bit of salt and water These ingredients will be used to prepare the phyllo dough Then you will need to gather the ingredients for the filling These should be 1 kg of crumbled feta cheese, half a cup of oil and half a cup of vegetable butter

You can get started right after you collect all the ingredients The first thing you need to do is to get started with the dough In a big bowl knead the flour with some salt and water until the dough softens up

Then leave the dough to rest for about 1 hour Afterwards, separate the dough into 4 equal sized balls and by using the rolling pin open up one by one the phyllo pieces on a floured surface, giving them a round shape Melt in the heated oil the vegetable butter and spread it on the phyllo pieces

Place on a big table a clean tablecloth (dimensions of 1,5X1,5) Then, place a phyllo piece on the tablecloth, and by using your hands pull it carefully from all sides so it stretches and covers the whole table (be careful the phyllo piece does not rip) It would be helpful if a second person helped with this procedure in order to make the phyllo pieces as thin as possible

CHOCOLATE DIPPING

The best compliment that can be paid store-bought candy is to say it tastes homemade This is as true of chocolates as it is of any other candy, but the proudest compliment a home chocolate dipper can receive is to have someone say her chocolates look professional - though they must still taste homemade

Chocolate dipping is a profession and dippers spend much time becoming adept at it, but once you have learned about the temperature requirements, the actual dipping is not difficult

Use at least a pound of chocolate for one session of dipping, shave it finely and put it in the top of a double boiler over water no higher than 120 degrees measured on your candy thermometer Cover the chocolate and begin to get your centers ready for dipping Stir occasionally so that the heat is distributed evenly When most of the chocolate is melted beat it thoroughly with a spoon or rubber paddle, smoothing out all the lumps

PENUCHE

1 pound brown sugar, 2 tablespoons butter, (2 1/3 cups) 1 teaspoon vanilla, 3/4 cup milk or equal parts milk and cream

Measure 1 pound brown sugar and 3/4 cup milk or milk and cream into a 3-quart saucepan and stir over low heat until the sugar dissolves Continue stirring until it boils, then put in your candy thermometer and boil over medium heat until it reaches a temperature of 237 degrees Remove from heat and add 2 tablespoons butter but do not stir

For a creamy penuche, cool to 110 degrees, add 1 teaspoon vanilla and beat until thick and creamy Turn into a buttered pan, 8 by 8 inches For a harder, more sugary candy, let cool to 150 degrees and beat until the candy begins to lose its gloss and begins to feel a little grainy under the spoon Penuche is easier to doctor than chocolate fudge, if you miss the perfect moment for turning it out If it becomes too hard, you can thin it with a small amount of cream, which will lessen the grainy texture, too

CHOCOLATE BONBONS

Take two ounces of powdered gum Arabic and soak it in a cupful of boiling water; then strain through a cheese cloth; add a teaspoonful of vanilla and enough powdered sugar to make a stiff paste Form the mixture into balls about the size of marbles, and set aside to dry Now make an icing Melt five ounces of sweet chocolate; put in with it two tablespoonfuls of water

Beat up the whites of two eggs, adding sufficient granulated sugar to make a soft icing; then stir in the melted chocolate Dip the balls into this icing, one at a time, and place on waxed paper to dry

MARASCHINO BONBONS

Are made the same as Chocolate Bonbons, with the exception that a teaspoonful of maraschino is used in the icing instead of chocolate

COFFEE BONBONS

Proceed as directed for Chocolate Bonbons, using coffee extract in the icing instead of chocolate

CRYSTALLIZED CHERRIES

With a cupful of best granulated sugar mix a table-spoonful of butter and four tablespoonfuls of water; then boil to the point that if you drop some mixture into cold water, it will form a hard ball Have some choice cherries, stoned and ready in a pan, and pour the syrup over them Gently move them around, so that they will be well coated, and set aside to cool When nearly cold, dry them in a warm place

CRYSTALLIZED PLUMS

Select ripe plums of the best quality Slit them on one side and remove stones; then proceed precisely as for Crystallized Cherries Other fruits may be coated in a similar manner

CRYSTALLIZED NUTS

Beat the white of an egg and in it put the nut kernels Stir them around and drain the egg off Beat it again, repeat the operation, then roll the nut kernels, one by one, in powdered sugar Place them on a plate and put the plate in a cool oven When the icing becomes dry and firm, take them out and keep in a dry place

FROSTED CHERRIES

Take the white of an egg and beat it well, adding a teaspoonful of cold water, and into this dip the cherries, one at a time, holding them by their stems; then roll the cherries in pulverized sugar and lay them on waxed paper to dry Keep in a cool place until ready for use

BUTTER SCOTCH

To a cupful of brown sugar add as much water and a tablespoonful of vinegar; set to boil and after coming to a boil add one and one-half ounces of butter; then continue boiling until brittle when dropped into cold water Remove from fire and pour into buttered pans to cool

Mix together a cupful of granulated FUDGE sugar, an ounce of butter, one-half cupful of milk, and place over a fire to boil Stir continuously When the mixture commences to boil add an ounce of finely-chopped chocolate, and continue boiling about ten minutes Test frequently in cold water, and when it reaches the degree where if you drop a small amount into cold water it will form a ball which cracks softly when you bite it, add a half tea-spoonful of vanilla, stir until quite stiff, and pour into buttered pans to cool When partly cold cut into small squares
